If you have ever had the pleasure of visiting the small town of Usk then you’ll know how easy it is to fall in love with the people, the history and the rural life that it offers to its residents. Many buyers who we work with are seeking a home in an area that embraces community, a place with plenty of things to do set against a backdrop of rolling countryside.
Before visiting the area, you could be forgiven for thinking that Usk was just another Welsh town with pretty gardens and historic sites, but its enchanting appeal lets you know that this is far from the end of Usk’s evolving story. The town is known for its pubs and restaurants, and is a regular winner of Wales in Bloom, but what else takes place in this little Welsh town that is drawing in new admirers and persuading them to make it their home?
The ‘sense of community’ here goes beyond the odd village hall get together and annual summer fayre; towns like Usk are offering residents and visitors a wealth of pop-up events, a love for local businesses, and a selection of community groups.
Popular local events such as the Usk Show, along with mini festivals and market days have helped to boost house prices as well as the local economy. A nationwide study by ATG Access found that a vibrant community has a positive impact on house prices. In Wales in particular, 70% of residents questioned praised the quality and diversity of the organised community events on offer.
It’s clear that buyers are seeking areas that have a strong community feel, so you need to make sure this is a key selling point when you sell your home. But what events are attracting buyers to Usk in particular, and creating such alluring community spirit?
Usk Farmers Market
Held on the first and third Saturday of every month, the Usk Farmers Market takes place from 10am to 1pm at the Memorial Hall, offering both indoor and outdoor stalls. Now in its 20th year, the market brings together a variety of food, drink, and artisan crafts twice a month. Thanks to other local food events and popular pub menus, the Farmers Market has become a firm fixture in a region renowned for its produce.
The Usk Show
This annual event has been running since 1844 and is now one of the biggest one-day agricultural shows in the whole of the UK. Sat on 100 acres, the Usk Show celebrates the best of Monmouthshire farming and rural life. From bouncing babies to playful puppies, everyone is welcome to enjoy a day out where you can see a wide range of livestock and cattle as well as over 300 traders showing off their impressive produce.
Each year, Usk welcomes over 15,000 cyclists through the picturesque town. The local schools and community groups work together to decorate the route where riders have taken on the challenging 140km and 110km ride. Every year the support from the locals continues to grow, and we can’t wait to see what they have planned for this year. The Velothon Wales will take place on 8th July and is sure to be another great success.
Usk in Bloom
Usk in Bloom may not be an event as such, but it’s certainly something that its residents are extremely proud of, and rightly so. In 2017 the small market town made up of just 2,300 people was named the winner of the Wales in Bloom Larger Village for the 36th year in a row! Usk also won Britain in Bloom 2017 in the Larger Village category in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom awards. Just walking around the town you’ll soon see why it has celebrated over 35 years of floral excellence.
