Congratulations you’ve sold your home! While your conveyancer is busy preparing your sale you should be thinking about what’s on your moving home checklist. So before you start packing, here are some helpful tips to cut costs and make moving easier…
Prepare paperwork
Your solicitor will require certain documents from you over the coming days/months. You obviously want the moving process to be as quick as possible so to help speed up your sale make sure you have these documents to hand.
- Guarantees and warranties
- Building work certificates
- Appliance servicing records
- Energy Performance Certificate
- ID
Compare removal costs
We were recently chatting with a local removal company who are currently fully booked for the next couple of months. They have regrettably had to turn away customers even though they offer their services 7 days a week. This has prompted us to include this helpful advice in our blog post. Once you know a moving date we recommend that you compare costs and get your date booked in.
Declutter your clutter
Moving home is the perfect opportunity to walk around your house and look for items that you no longer need or use. This will significantly lighten your load ready for your big move, you’ll be surprised by how much clutter you have accumulated. Sort your items into piles that you can sell donate or simply throw away.
Pass on your post
You can use the Royal Mail’s postal redirection service to ensure that your mail still reaches you but obviously, there is a fee for this service. Your new homeowner should pass on any mail during the crossover period to your agent but remember to update your correspondence and delivery address on all bills, bank and your favourite shopping sites!
Remember your meter readings
Before you move home you’ll need to make sure your utility bills are settled and give final meter readings. Once you’re in your new home find the right provider for you by using online comparison tools.
Clean both old and new
Unfortunately, when moving home there’s no getting away from cleaning! You should of course give your home a thorough clean before you pass on the keys, this also helps you to ensure you’ve not left anything behind. Check and wipe down all cupboards, closets and cubby holes before you go.
On the day
When moving day finally arrives don’t forget to have a kettle, mugs, tea, coffee and milk handy as well as cleaning products so you can hit the ground running before you begin the task of unpacking.
