12 months of resolutions to keep your home in shape

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? Perhaps, like us, you’ve already given in and have eaten the odd chocolate bar or have left the washing up until the next day. Don’t be too hard on yourself, we have a list of achievable resolutions that will improve your home without giving you a headache!

As a homeowner you’ll understand that maintaining your property is a full-time job, and sometimes life gets in the way of keeping on top of your list of things to do. To help you keep your home in tip-top condition here’s our calendar of jobs to complete around the home this year.

January – Safety First

In the unlikely event of an emergency, would your family be safe? Spend time this month checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, appliances, central heating and burglar alarm, hiring professionals where needed.

February – Repaint and Repair

As the most romantic month of the year, what says ‘I love you’ more than completing those odd jobs that you’ve been putting off? Repaint where needed and repair broken taps and cupboards etc to fall back in love with your home.

March – Spring Clean

We know you keep your home clean all year round, but March is a great time to put your gloves on and give each room a deep clean. Don’t forget your doors, garden and junk drawer, you’ll thank us later!

April – Jet Wash

Buy or borrow a jet wash to spruce up your paths, patios and parking ready for the summer. You will be surprised just how much dirt has accumulated in these areas and how different they look after a good clean.

May – Get in the garden

Your garden is beginning to wake up, meaning you need to prepare it for summer. This is your last chance to sow or lay your lawn and mow it weekly until the autumn. The end of the month is the best time to plant vegetables and soft fruit.

June – Summer Essentials

Repaint the garden fence, treat the decking and dust off the barbecue, get your home ready for entertaining with kids toys, alfresco dining furniture and a paddling pool.

July – Holiday Home Security

If you’re lucky enough to be jetting off on holiday make sure that your home is secure, locking all outdoor buildings and windows, and keeping valuables out of sight.

August – Harvest

This is the first month that you can harvest your homegrown fruit and vegetables, it’s time to pick your peas and collect your crops. Some shrubs will have now finished flowering so you can lightly trim, where needed.

September – Get in the gutters

Before the bad weather arrives, it’s important to check your roof and gutters. If you’re not comfortable with heights call your local handyman who will clean your gutters for a small fee – trust us, this will save you money in the long run.

October – Switch up your space

If you’re not ready to renovate but fancy a change, try giving your home a boost of energy by switching your furniture or swapping some rooms around. If you’re hoping to sell before Christmas, giving rooms a clear purpose can attract potential buyers.

November – Get winter-ready

Is your home winter-ready? Service your boiler, clean out your chimney and insulate your loft – these are just a few of the ways you can save energy and money this winter.

December – Declutter

With Christmas around the corner, December is a great time to declutter, throw out, sell or donate items that you haven’t used all year. Decluttering is great for your home and mind heading into the new year.
