One Caerleon event not to be missed

Aside from being a renowned Roman village steeped in history, Caerleon also boasts a community who invest their time and heart into the local area throughout the year. The real highlight of the social calendar though is the annual Summer Festival, which runs from Friday 6^th to Monday 16^th July.Originally the arts festival began as a sculpture event, which has since flourished into a celebration of the arts. The festival showcases a variety of local talents as well as inviting artists, bands and exhibitors from across the UK. The programme includes the Schools’ Art Exhibition at the Celtic Manor, Shakespeare in the Amphitheatre, celebrity poetry and a big choir in the church, “Literature on the Lawn” of the Priory Hotel, “The Big Free Weekend” with over 45 bands/performers at the Hanbury Arms and Bell Inn, and crafts, exhibitors and sculptors on the Festival Field.The Festival joins together the local schools, businesses and volunteers to produce a wealth of community spirit blended with a true celebration of the arts set against the backdrop of the history and legend of the Roman fortress.Here are just a selection of the events taking place throughout the 11-day festival.Monmouthshire & Newport Community Choir – Friday 6^th July from 6:15pm at the Amphitheatre. Gwent Music set up these community choirs, which now have over 35 members of all ages performing a range of repertoire including pop, classical and traditional songs.The Winter’s Tale – Friday 6^th July from 7:30pm at the Amphitheatre. The Winter’s Tale is described as an intriguing mix of drama and comedy, which will be performed by a premier professional all-male company in the rare open-air setting of the Roman Amphitheatre.Literature on the Lawn – Saturday 7^th July from 11:30am at the Priory Hotel. Enjoy a literary celebration in the grounds of the Priory Hotel, which will include a pop-up bookshop and a feast of discussions.Murray Lachlan Young – Saturday 7^th July from 7:00pm at the Priory Hotel. Acclaimed poet, playwright, broadcaster and writer Murray Lachlan Young will be live on stage bringing his flamboyant punchy wit and brooding subtext with empathetic humour.Festival Songs of Praise – Sunday 8^th July from 4:00pm at St Cadoc’s Church. The church doors will open to everyone to enjoy an afternoon of joining voices to sing the praises of God.The Big Free Weekend – Saturday 14^th and Sunday 15^th July from 12:00pm at the Hanbury Arms and Bell Inn.
