Aside from being a renowned Roman village steeped in history, Caerleon also boasts a community who invest their time and heart into the local area throughout the year. The real highlight of the social calendar though is the annual Summer Festival, which runs from Friday 6th to Monday 16th July.Originally the arts festival began as a sculpture event, which has since flourished into a celebration of the arts. The festival showcases a variety of local talents as well as inviting artists, bands and exhibitors from across the UK. The programme includes the Schools’ Art Exhibition at the Celtic Manor, Shakespeare in the Amphitheatre, celebrity poetry and a big choir in the church, “Literature on the Lawn” of the Priory Hotel, “The Big Free Weekend” with over 45 bands/performers at the Hanbury Arms and Bell Inn, and crafts, exhibitors and sculptors on the Festival Field. The Festival joins together the local schools, businesses and volunteers to produce a wealth of community spirit blended with a true celebration of the arts set against the backdrop of the history and legend of the Roman fortress. Here are just a selection of the events taking place throughout the 11-day festival.Monmouthshire & Newport Community Choir – Friday 6th July from 6:15pm at the Amphitheatre.
