Winter Walks

Do you look forward to your traditional Boxing Day walk? A winter walk is a staple for many families and during these strange times, a walk with those in your bubble can be an enjoyable day out. Whilst some local amenities remain shut, exploring the outdoors provides a fun and free activity for the whole family.

Here are our top picks of some of the beautiful scenes around our little corner of South Wales.

The Wetlands

The perfect walk for children, The Wetlands is the ideal opportunity to spot some local wildlife with picturesque views across the Severn Estuary. With free parking and level paths, this winter walk is ideal for pushchairs and wheelchairs however dogs are restricted.

Twmbarlwm

The circular walk up Twmbarlwm starts at the visitor car park at Cwmcarn Forest with a choice of different paths depending on your preference and ability. The trails have specific paths for bikes only however the walking paths are perfect for dogs and children with a playground on the way up to the top of Twmbarlwm.

Tredegar House and Park

This winter walk offers something for everyone, history, scenery and fun! With an abundance of space, you can take in the history of Tredegar House, stroll along the lake or play in the park. Part of the National Trust, the Tredegar lakeside walk is a short circular trail around the perimeter of the parkland. The one mile, level walk will take you around 30 to 40 minutes to complete and don’t forget your wellies!

Blorenge

For a truly unforgettable countryside walk head to the hilltop of Blorenge in the Brecon Beacons National Park. You’ll step out of your car at Keeper’s Pond and look out over the Black Mountains. On a clear day, you can see the highest peaks of the Brecon Beacons including Pen y Fan, Corn Du and Cribyn to the west.

Tintern Abbey

No matter the weather Tintern Abbey remains a beauty spot all year round, although the stunning remains are closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day you can enjoy a walk around these dates. Explore the 5-mile loop from Tintern Abbey to Devils Pulpit popular with hikers, walkers and bird watchers.
