I know what you’re thinking: you thought that we were going to give you some moving home wisdom, but no! New Years are all about challenging yourself, so whether you believe in resolutions or not, why not try something new in 2018? Maybe enter one of the key events, or take up a new hobby - we have put together a list of 10 ways you can get moving this New Year.
- The best hangover cure ever
You’ve celebrated to the max this New Year’s Eve, and you may be feeling a little sore-headed and even sluggish after all that festive food. But instead of sitting in front of the TV to watch even more Christmas films, we recommend heading on down to Whitmore Bat at Barry Island. With slightly less than tropical waters, at 12pm you can join the many other brave (and possibly a little crazy) souls as they head into the water for the
Barry Island New Year’s Day Swim and raise money for some good causes at the same time.
- Make a difference
Sometimes it’s not always the big gestures that make a difference, even the smallest acts can bring a smile. This is why we encourage you to do something for the community within which you live, such as joining a litter pick-up. The first Saturday of every month you can join the regular Pontnewydd Litter-Pick at Richmond Road Baptist Church from 10am – 11am.
- Help bring care home
We know how much people in the area respect St David’s Hospice Care, and you can help raise much-needed funds by taking part in their 10km race on the 25
th February. To help you achieve your goals there is even an
8-week training plan for you to follow, so you have plenty of time to get race fit.The
Pontypool 10k takes you from Pontypool to Mamhillad and back along the scenic canal towpath from Monmouthshire to Brecon.
- Go further afield
One of the most wonderful things about Wales is the number of breathtaking walks and rambles you can find on your doorstep. If you’re a keen walker or have a desire to spend more time outdoors in 2018, why not take part in the
Big Welsh Walk, where you can conquer Ceredigion. They state that it will be an outdoor experience to remember, “sweeping through a mysterious landscape made famous by the award-winning S4C/BBC Wales TV detective series Y Gwyll/Hinterland.” What a magical way to explore more of the hidden treasures of Wales.
- Be part of something new
Sunday 29
th April is the date when thousands of runners will take to the streets of Newport for the
Newport Wales Marathon 2018. This much-anticipated race is said to be one of the UK’s flattest and fastest marathon courses - wonderful news if you’re not a fan of hills.Whether you decide to run for one of the Official Associated Charities or just to give yourself a big challenge, we know that, although tired, you will feel a massive sense of pride when you cross that finish line.
- Pick your route
For an event your whole family can take part in, we would recommend
The Tour de Gwent again in support of St David’s Hospice Care. With six different routes to choose from, from the 3-mile kids' race to the 93 miles of the Platinum Route, there is an option for you regardless of your ability.Starting off in Caerleon, you cycle past some of our area’s most idyllic scenery. Many of our team will be there to cheer you on your way.
- Our arm was twisted
Now our next suggestion had to be included, as it is a favourite of our Director, Phil. He can often be found displaying his talents on the tennis courts at
Cwmbran Tennis Club, and we know he would encourage everyone to go and have a go.It is a great activity to enjoy with your kids, and you don’t have to be Andy Murray to have fun on the court.
- Bounce yourself fit
If you have children, you probably won’t have avoided a trip to one of the many new trampoline parks that keep popping up all over. But trampolining is not just for children, and many of these parks also have fantastic classes for adults, such as one in Newport.Energi in Newport offers an
Energi Fit class for those who find the gym or other exercise routines boring. What could be more fun than finding your inner child as you bounce yourself fit?
- Reach for the skies
Go Vertical in Cwmbran has become a popular place for kids as well as adults, as it caters for all abilities. Scale the walls and reach for the skies whilst improving your endurance – plus, a one-hour climbing session can burn hundreds of calories. What more do you need to know?
- Welcome home
We just couldn’t resist putting this one in here. Anyway,
moving home is a great way of staying active in 2018. From de-cluttering your house and packing boxes to assembling flat-pack furniture and discovering the community within which you now live, your new home is an exciting way to get moving this New Year. How are you planning to get moving this New Year?
We would love to hear your plans.
